My to do list includes placing a mask around the stage so that the information is not visible outside of the stage when the view is set to full screen. I also need feed back from the class about the number of scenes that are included in each path and what feeling is being conveyed by each scene. I am fairly happy with the majority of the project but my judgment may be cloudy since I have seen the project continually.

state of the funion

My work on this final project has gone towards experiments with light and color using simple shapes and movement to create a complex repetition of the shapes overlapping and using transparency to show complexity in the stacking of layers.

My progress on the project is that I have put together a collection of svenes that reflect either a positive feeling or a darker/negative feeling. I've created about ten of them and need to create ten more. The project has not been set up with the proper code yet, but the code is not the most difficult part since my controls are going to consist of jumping to certain frames and scenes, basic time-line controls. Overall the look and feel of the site was more and important to me than the amount of fun that I had. It made me feel like I was doing something more important if it looked like the graphics had some eloquence behind them.

In visual acoustics you have several brushes / instruments that you can choose from: piano, violin, flute, guitar, harp, strings, upright bass, and tenor sax. Turning on the instruments and adjusting the variables of volume and delay adds an interesting mix for interactivity, although it took me a minute to figure out what the delay actually did,(if one delay is set to low it cuts off the other instruments that have delays set at a high number.)

The graphics emit from the mouse controller as you move over a color field that looks much like a color picker in Adobe, the graphics flow smoothly as the notes play from the points that your mouse hits on the grid.

It wasn't the most fun I had going through these sites but I felt like it was the best put together.

Working on project

At this point I am concentrating on producing scenes for my flash document. The graph splits into several directions depending on what route a person could take when faced with transition, these differences will be shown through color and shape contrasts and the user will be given options for the particular path they wish to take. The point of this project is to use projected light in order to create an environment that enables the user to control the psychological feel in the room according to the choices they make on this path of transition. Most of the research on transition psychology has been done in order to benifit employees and companies, my hope is to take this information and turn it into something that can be experienced and observed, and learned from in an artistic setting instead of a corporate setting that might feel a need to control your life transitions in the best interest of the company. This would be an attempt to put soul into transition psychology. My main goal is to create atmosphere with light, and I think that the simple terms used in the graph can be illustrated with color and simple shape interaction.

Project ideas

I want to explore transition psychology and use this graph as inspiration for my graphics.

1. Does it need to be a clean international design
or should it be full of character and be playful. Well clean be fun dependening on the colors I guess. When does clean become simplistic and boring? This makes me think that a site should be simple like a business card, but business cards can be fun too.

The sites that I like the most that have been done in flash contain an element of real life texture: paper, wood, textiles, etc... It takes the process of analyzing spending habits, a process that is happening constantly around the globe but is hardly noticed, and exposes it in a creative way. This says net.art to me because it uses technology and art to make a statement. I'm not sure that this statement is good or bad, is it good or bad to have our spending tracked, I geuss it depends on who is doing the tracking or who is being tracked.

This statement interested me: "Influenced by today's techno-cultural milieu, MYPOCKET presents a hybrid interface to a living physical/digital process."

Does net.art create interfaces in which to view our lives in all its glories and pitfalls, its excitement and mediochrity, just as any other art would except that it is expressed in this new world of code, unseen technology and software?

These "Time Quilts" seem like sketches of moments, in some ways it is very similar to how memory works or dreams, in flashes and recalling certain impressions on the mind.

Net.Art

Can the Net.Art experience can be described as a subversive? Should this movement be catagporized by being unsatisfied with what is handed to us by those who seem to be in control of code and/or information?

Is Net.art a movement that seeks actions that may have negative consequences, especially when appropriating material, or trying to subvert the stronghold of corporations on a resource that could be used for creative community building. Community building that is not based on merchandising, but based on creating new ways of thinking about our future and how our lives are shaped by the world we live in today, especially when it comes to ideas not excepted by the mainstream or majority.

Is net.art about one particular thing, or is it just a mess of things labeled Net.art that could very well have its own label, especially now that the net is connected with our lives in an almost seamless fashion. Should net.art just be called public art.

Q and A's

Question 1. Since digital media entered the field of art has the perception of art changed?

Answer: The perception of art has changed inevitably due to the fact that our reality has changed. We can now associate with a visual language that has been created that did not exist before video or computers or internet. As the digital world continues to change so will our cultural language so will our art.

Question 2.A relevant section of digital art represents Internet based art. The Internet hardly existed, but artists conquered already this new field for their artistic activities. Can the work of these early artists be compared with those who work with advanced technologies nowadays? What changed until these days? What might be the perspectives for future developments?

Answer: Work created today is built on the the expriments of the past. I have seen plenty of sites that use new technology to create an image that appears to use low-fi technology, even though it is obviously running much smoother than the originals ever could. In order for the field to progress into the future, the technology of today must be pushed to its limits and manipulated beyond its original use, much like the technology of the past was put through. (although the technology of the past may still be the technology of today)

Question 3.The term "netart" is widely used for anything posted on the net; there are dozens of definitions that mostly are even contradictory. How do you define "netart" or if you like the description "Internet based art" better? Do you think "netart" is art, at all, if yes, what are the criteria? Are there any aesthetic criteria for an Internet based artwork?

Answer: I define net.art as a need to express oneself through the technology that has been presented by the internet and It would be to my liking that this expression be to the contrary of mainstream ideas in order to expand the horizons of the viewer. It should beautifully unexpected.

Question 4.Dealing with this new, and interactive type of art demands an active viewer or user, and needs the audience much more and in different ways than any other art discipline before. How do you think would be good ways to stimulate the user to dive into this new world of art? What do you think represents an appropriate environment to present net based art to an audience, is it the context of the lonesome user sitting in front of his personal computer, is it any public context, or is it rather the context of art in general or media art in particular, or anything else.? If you would be in the position to create an environment for presenting this type of art in physical space, how would you do it?

Answer: I think having an art show at a gallery, in public, sounds silly for an interactive piece that could be posted on the internet, but creating an atmosphere in a public place that strives to get people exploring and creating interactively, will promote the idea to our culture that this is fun or this is serious and I can be a part of this new thing that is creating excitement. This approach could bring net.art and any other low-fi interactive art together in one place, creating opportunity for even more exploration combining the two. Any space would do as long as you had the funds to create a vision that unified the space.

Question 5.As Internet based art, as well as other art forms using new technologies are (globally seen) still not widely accepted, yet, as serious art forms, what do you think could be an appropriate solution to change this situation?

Answer: I think that it is just a matter of time. It may not ever be seen as a viable art form until it has investment growth possibilities, as so the world goes. I think that as long as the work is able to move people it has already become art, it is up to the viewers to except the world they live in and except that these technologies are only an extension of how we live and how we will continue to live, just like paint pigments or the photograph have become art, they are just a part of who we are and they are accepted that way.

http://www.shiftwork.org.uk/work/motion/index.html

related to shiftspace

The work on shiftspace and shiftwork uses dance, music, and video to create an atmosphere that is hard to describe. It can be uneasy at times but mostly beautiful in its interactions between the movement of the dancers interacting with the shape of the format in which they are presented. The user interaction is limited, which allows for maximum attention to be given to the flow and subtlety of its content. I am not particullarly a dance fan, but the availability of the work to be played in my own setting, at my own pace, and at my own discretion made dance more appealing to me. This aspect brings me to the realization of what interactive media can be, given the time to explore and given something interesting or mysterious to explore, the reaction of the viewer, and counter-action of the artist can be endless and gratifying for both.

Vuk Cosic

Should net.art be concerned with making money, is that not the opposite approach to what makes Internet art so cool in the first place. The fact that it rellies on its own set of standards. I could see finding a way to make money by providing something that is av ante-guard, something that cannot be produced again, and selling this piece of work. But once you start thinking about money, who are you going to sell to, and doesn't this question already start to influence your work. I know that in professional painting, writing , or any kind of art, once you start trying to appeal to someone or some group, this can begin to take the fun out of some of the creative process. Just think if for a second that your favorite band started off in their endeavours creating music in order to make money, they would be Marky Mark or The Monkeys, sure you may be able to sing a couple of their songs off the top of your head, but did they really do anything for society? I just think that it becomes dangerous once you start making art for money, But then again, I may not understand the concept of art for money, and maybe the greatest art in the world is the one that lies and steals money from your pocket, much like a concert poster would or an ad for a great tasting cup of coffee.

Check it Out

Light and Sound

Our world is made of instances sight and sound. These instances can be random or organized. Our day to day lives deal mostly with random chaos of information that comes to us through our peripherals. Take for example the hum of the machines that we have learned to block out, the white noise of the computer, air condition units, and airplanes, or with sight, the examples of cheap office lighting, computer screens, or the highbeams reflected off of a billboard, these elements in our world can have the ability to affect us in weird ways. To be aware of these moods created by our own industrial environment may be the key to understanding our times and how we exist in this world that has become more and more man made. With this in mind what happens when you isolate a mind in an environment, and try to control these elements in a very specific way? What mood can you create using these elements.

Video / Match Girl

For this part of the assignment I focused on creating effects in photoshop with color change. I thought this might create a feeling of emotion that could only be accomplished through the type of light produced within the change. Batch processing was my friend in this approach. Although it felt like it went fairly fast in the process, I was not able to get as much done as I would have liked.

I researched "The Little Match Girl" as a new topic for my "match" project.
This is the story:

The Little Match-Seller

by

Hans Christian Andersen

(1846)

T was terribly cold and nearly dark on the last evening of the old year, and the snow was falling fast. In the cold and the darkness, a poor little girl, with bare head and naked feet, roamed through the streets. It is true she had on a pair of slippers when she left home, but they were not of much use. They were very large, so large, indeed, that they had belonged to her mother, and the poor little creature had lost them in running across the street to avoid two carriages that were rolling along at a terrible rate. One of the slippers she could not find, and a boy seized upon the other and ran away with it, saying that he could use it as a cradle, when he had children of his own. So the little girl went on with her little naked feet, which were quite red and blue with the cold. In an old apron she carried a number of matches, and had a bundle of them in her hands. No one had bought anything of her the whole day, nor had anyone given her even a penny. Shivering with cold and hunger, she crept along; poor little child, she looked the picture of misery. The snowflakes fell on her long, fair hair, which hung in curls on her shoulders, but she regarded them not.
Lights were shining from every window, and there was a savory smell of roast goose, for it was New-year’s eve—yes, she remembered that. In a corner, between two houses, one of which projected beyond the other, she sank down and huddled herself together. She had drawn her little feet under her, but she could not keep off the cold; and she dared not go home, for she had sold no matches, and could not take home even a penny of money. Her father would certainly beat her; besides, it was almost as cold at home as here, for they had only the roof to cover them, through which the wind howled, although the largest holes had been stopped up with straw and rags. Her little hands were almost frozen with the cold. Ah! perhaps a burning match might be some good, if she could draw it from the bundle and strike it against the wall, just to warm her fingers. She drew one out—“scratch!” how it sputtered as it burnt! It gave a warm, bright light, like a little candle, as she held her hand over it. It was really a wonderful light. It seemed to the little girl that she was sitting by a large iron stove, with polished brass feet and a brass ornament. How the fire burned! and seemed so beautifully warm that the child stretched out her feet as if to warm them, when, lo! the flame of the match went out, the stove vanished, and she had only the remains of the half-burnt match in her hand.
She rubbed another match on the wall. It burst into a flame, and where its light fell upon the wall it became as transparent as a veil, and she could see into the room. The table was covered with a snowy white table-cloth, on which stood a splendid dinner service, and a steaming roast goose, stuffed with apples and dried plums. And what was still more wonderful, the goose jumped down from the dish and waddled across the floor, with a knife and fork in its breast, to the little girl. Then the match went out, and there remained nothing but the thick, damp, cold wall before her.
She lighted another match, and then she found herself sitting under a beautiful Christmas-tree. It was larger and more beautifully decorated than the one which she had seen through the glass door at the rich merchant’s. Thousands of tapers were burning upon the green branches, and colored pictures, like those she had seen in the show-windows, looked down upon it all. The little one stretched out her hand towards them, and the match went out.
The Christmas lights rose higher and higher, till they looked to her like the stars in the sky. Then she saw a star fall, leaving behind it a bright streak of fire. “Someone is dying,” thought the little girl, for her old grandmother, the only one who had ever loved her, and who was now dead, had told her that when a star falls, a soul was going up to God.
She again rubbed a match on the wall, and the light shone round her; in the brightness stood her old grandmother, clear and shining, yet mild and loving in her appearance. “Grandmother,” cried the little one, “O take me with you; I know you will go away when the match burns out; you will vanish like the warm stove, the roast goose, and the large, glorious Christmas-tree.” And she made haste to light the whole bundle of matches, for she wished to keep her grandmother there. And the matches glowed with a light that was brighter than the noon-day, and her grandmother had never appeared so large or so beautiful. She took the little girl in her arms, and they both flew upwards in brightness and joy far above the earth, where there was neither cold nor hunger nor pain, for they were with God.
In the dawn of morning there lay the poor little one, with pale cheeks and smiling mouth, leaning against the wall; she had been frozen to death on the last evening of the year; and the New-year’s sun rose and shone upon a little corpse! The child still sat, in the stiffness of death, holding the matches in her hand, one bundle of which was burnt. “She tried to warm herself,” said some. No one imagined what beautiful things she had seen, nor into what glory she had entered with her grandmother, on New-year’s day.

dragging assignment #5

The creative spirit gets crushed by massive code.

Phossy Jaw

Fossy Jaw is about bringing to attention work place hazards that may not seem harmless at first but over time can cause painful disease. Breathing dust or chemicals, being forced to work in unsafe conditions, these are just some of the things people must go through in order to survive. Most the time it is the owners of the business that already know the dangers behind their businesses, and choose to sweep it under the rug in the name of profit and effeciency. This is history and history will repeat itself. Reading the first chapter of cause and effect gave me some insight to how to construct a timeline that is interactive. Getting started doing this seems like it could help organize a jumble of ideas that could go in any direction, but all possibilities ending in the same spot. It wouldn't have to end in the same spot, but having a central theme and to be seen as a whole. The preparing was a good idea but I don't think I was prepared enough. The codes I tried to use ended up confusing me more than anything. More time code writting will do me some good.

Phossy Jaw

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_aBrjiQrMyQg/RvJ__gsGBXI/AAAAAAAAAAs/sdCEn97OKrk/s320/M1.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5112289256102298994" />
The project of writting actions in with our flash movies is somewhat frustrating. I chose a subject related to matchbooks and matches which is the disease of phossy jaw. The intent was to portray the description of the disease through typography, letting the words illustrate in their shape, size, and color, the emotion that should be carried over to the viewer. In reality what happened was that more concern was taken in getting the Flash elements to work properly and less attention was given to asthetics and more to getting all the required tweens and other such fun stuff. In the end I know what it needs, but have spent enough time on this project for now.

<img style="float:left; The ideal subject for revealing the purpose and flaws of this process is an object of everyday use and of small size. In order to really understand why we aggrandize things in our stories and in our media, it would not make sense to use any sort of reference that may be viewed as larger than life already or having the potential of being larger than life.

This project will deal with the match box as a tool to discover the limits of boasting. Are there outer limits of how far you can go before boasting becomes a negative thing? Like you've gone too far and said too much for any one to ever believe you. Its one thing to be proud but it may be another to just say anything for attention. What are you saying anout the product/object/idea? What is its function? A: To make fire, on a stick. What have they done for society? Well, a match box is certainly done more than most everyday objects. How hard would it be to start a fire without a match? (lighters haven't been around for ever, maybe?) Matches are a staple for the household.

In addition to the ideal size and history of its usage is the history of its actual design, how the box is produced, and its graphics. The shape of the box and its printed design will work well with graphics within this project and its goals to maximize the visual potential of the object. Running type, off the the box, throughout the fore ground and the back ground creating space around the box, enabling for for an environment that belongs to the idea of what the box means to us and to its own existance.

Showing video is one of my wants.

Setting up a studio shot of the MB and using flash on top?

"Watercouleur Park" - Qubo Gas, Tate Museum

From the Tate site I visited the "Watercouleur Park", which I found to be peaceful and entertaining in a way that one could find doing yoga entertaining, or actually the pleasure created by actually going to a real park. But this window into the mind of the artist, by French artists group Qubo Gas, is an experience all on to itself. With its cut and paste style that is able to rotate in a 3 dimensional space, it tends to remind me of the Beatles "Sargent Peppers" movie in its style. Overall its seems a complete package, due to its simple purpose this may have not been hard to achieve but I believe that this is why it works, it does not overreach its boundaries. The use case scenario, as I see it, is to achieve a sense of traveling to and from sections of a virtual park which involves moving through white space in order to reach these small sections of park that include clusters of cut and paste drawings of plants and clouds that resemble scenes from any corner of any park that you might stumble upon. You navigate through these areas by moving the mouse around on the screen. When you are at the cluster of plant shape, the cursor in the bottom left hand of the screen makes the cluster zoom out and rotate and to zoom in and rotate you move the cursor to right upper part of the screen. After a certain amount of time the program move on to a new cluster of plant drawings.
